World Tsunamis: An Unforeseen Threat
A tsunami is a large sea wave that occurs due to the movement of the earth’s plates, volcanic eruptions, or underwater landslides. Worldwide, these waves can cause severe damage and loss of life. In recent decades, awareness of the potential threat of tsunamis has increased, but many people are still unaware of how dangerous tsunamis actually are.
Causes of Tsunamis
Tsunamis are usually triggered by some natural event, with the most common being an earthquake. When tectonic plates move and one of the plates is pushed upwards, the energy released causes seawater to move rapidly, creating large waves. Apart from earthquakes, volcanic eruptions that suddenly release material into the sea can also cause tsunamis. Undersea landslides and meteorite impacts are also rare, but potentially devastating causes.
Tsunami Prone Area
Several regions in the world are vulnerable to tsunamis. Countries such as Indonesia, Japan and Chile are located on the “Pacific Ring of Fire”, known for its high seismic activity. In Indonesia, for example, a large tsunami occurred in 2004 with victims of more than 230,000 people. Twelve years later, another tsunami hit Palu in 2018. Japan also recorded a devastating tsunami in 2011 that swept away the nuclear facilities in Fukushima, causing a major environmental crisis.
Tsunami Wave Characteristics
Tsunami waves have unique characteristics that differentiate them from ordinary ocean waves. Tsunamis can reach speeds of up to 800 kilometers per hour in the open ocean. Offshore, these waves can feel harmless, but as they approach land, the waves will increase in height, sometimes over 30 meters. The first wave was not the biggest; often, the second or third wave is larger and more dangerous.
Tsunami Impact
The impact of a tsunami is not only limited to physical damage. Apart from destroying buildings and infrastructure, tsunamis can damage clean water systems, causing disease outbreaks. Loss of agricultural produce can also devastate local economies. In addition, the psychological trauma experienced by victims and survivors can last a lifetime.
Public Perception and Awareness
People often think less about tsunamis because they are relatively rare events. Education and outreach are important aspects to increase awareness of this risk. Evacuation programs and training on what to do when there is a tsunami warning need to be carried out regularly, especially in high risk areas.
Technology and Early Warning Systems
With advances in technology, tsunami early warning systems have developed. Earthquake sensors and sea level sensors can detect suspicious movements, and these systems can provide warnings before tsunami waves arrive. However, the effectiveness of this system depends on the community’s response. Always following government warnings and existing means of communication is key to safety.
Preventive and Mitigation Steps
Tsunami prevention cannot be done directly, but risk mitigation can be done through development policies and community preparedness. Construction of tsunami-resistant buildings, maintenance of evacuation routes, and wise management of natural resources can reduce the impact of tsunamis. Regional risk analyzes and hazard maps should be available for every tsunami-prone community.
