Casino – An Ode to the Mob and a Warning Against the Evils

A casino is a gambling establishment that offers various games of chance to the public. The most popular ones are blackjack, roulette, and video poker, but there are many more. Some casinos are even specialized in these games and offer unique variations. These are usually based on different themes and offer a variety of betting options. Besides the games, many casinos also provide other services that make the experience more exciting and entertaining. These services include live dealers and special bonuses for the players. These are designed to attract a wide range of people, from casual gamblers to high rollers.

The word “casino” is derived from the Italian ”cassa”, meaning house, and the concept spread throughout Europe after the large public gambling houses were closed. Casinos became popular among European upper classes, whose members would meet in private clubs and gamble on the weekend. They were later opened to the general public.

In Casino, Scorsese imagines a casino that is both an ode to the mob and a warning against its evils. Its opulent interiors and bravura set pieces evoke the decadent luxury of an elegant spa town that once lured royalty and aristocracy from across Europe. Yet the movie brims with hellacious violence, including a torture-by-vice sequence and a tumultuous, sound-designed baseball bat beating that had to be trimmed for an NC-17 rating.

The movie also reflects on how a once-dangerous, seedy world of organized crime has been replaced by real estate investors and hotel chains with deeper pockets than the mobsters themselves. Nevertheless, the movie still shows how mob involvement can undermine the business model of a casino and lead to federal investigations.
